If you have ever installed NOD32 antivirus application and uninstalled it, try deleting the file called imon.dll in your Windows/system32 folder and then using your mail program and browser.

You can’t?

That’s because the file is bound to several processes without which you can’t use the Internet. You won’t even be able to ping anyone.

On my system the following 7 processes are currently dependent on imon.dll:

    lsass.exe
    4 instances of svchost.exe
    alg.exe
    thunderbird.exe
    firefox.exe

I uninstalled NOD32 so long ago I can’t remember when it was. Only when I deleted imon.dll the other day and lost all my Internet capability did I realise what it was doing.

How can a software company write code that is left running permanently on users’ systems after being “uninstalled” and which has such a drastic affect? It’s ridiculous. I contaced ESET about this and so far, they have been unable to help me get this file off my system.

UPDATE

Finally managed to get rid of it. Now I turn my attention to getting my Speedtouch 330 Modem to work with Windows Pista.
